Jobs Description

Responsible for oversight of all non-social enrichment for all species housed at the site. Including, but not limited to ordering produce, enrichment foodstuffs, and enrichment devices for all animals maintained on site.
Lead evaluation efforts of new enrichment devices and provide input on strategies for promoting species typical behavior in individually and socially housed animals.
Promote and execute a proactive enrichment program focused on preventing abnormal behaviors.
Monitor animal behavioral health and provide care for animals needing special attention and/or treatment.
Perform behavioral assessments in response to reports of behavioral abnormalities and make recommendations for treatment.
Develop a behavioral treatment plan for animals exhibiting abnormal behavior.
Routinely socialize mature male animals
Work with other departments to coordinate animal psychological/behavioral enrichment, including the acclimation and socialization of animals.
Perform positive reinforcement training for common tasks (e.g. entry of NHPs into catching tunnels; habituations)
Work closely with the veterinary and animal care staff to ensure proper animal care standards are maintained.
Utilize advanced dam / infant care and introduction skills
Research and review current literature regarding animal behavior and environmental enrichment as assigned.
Revise relevant SOPs as needed to ensure accordance with the Animal Welfare Act and accepted professional standards.
Routinely handle animals as required for duties.
Maintain and track data related to social housing, exemptions to social housing, and abnormal behavior.
Maintain documentation for the Behavioral Management Program.
Train staff and other site personnel on aspects of animal behavior and enrichment as needed.
May be needed to provide support in other veterinary groups
May serve as IACUC committee member.
Perform all other related duties as assigned.

Jobs Requirement

General Equivalent Degree GED + 4 years experience + LAT certification or Bachelors degree (preferred) +4 years experience or Associates degree (A.S. or equivalent in scientific related discipline +4 years experience
years related experience in animal science, biology, chemistry/pharmacy, or similar lab environment or must have fully satisfied technical and experience requirements for the previous level.
An equivalent combination of education and experience may be accepted as a satisfactory substitute for the specific education and experience listed above.
AALAS certification at the LAT level preferred
Demonstrated advanced technical and analytical skills. Effective communication and leadership skills. Ability to handle Non Human primates Proficient in technical skills and the operation of data collection equipment. Knowledge of regulations and guidelines relating to the care of laboratory animals required. Understanding of basic, intermediate, and complex Non-Human primates care and management. Ability to organize and prioritize work to meet deadlines. Computer literacy including word processing, spreadsheet and database programs.
